Acupuncture back treatment

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) encompasses centuries old medicine incorporating Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs, Acupressure, Cupping, Gua Sha, Moxabustion, Tui Na, Electroacupuncture, Auricular Acupuncture, Korean Hand Therapy and Scalp Acupuncture.  Acupuncture and the other TCM modalities are now a widely accepted form of health and healing with many hospitals in the Twin Cities area incorporating TCM into their treatments.

Traditional Chinese Medicine modalities include the follow

  •  Acupuncture: inserting thin, fine needles into acupuncture points throughout the body  based on the TCM pattern diagnosis

  • Chinese Herbs: individual herbs or formulas that are paired together based on the TCM classics to heal TCM pattern diagnosis in patients

  •  Acupressure: placing a fingertip or gently massaging an acupuncture point

  •  Cupping: creating a vacuum between a glass cup and the patients skin where the skin and muscle are drawn into the cup while bringing Qi and Blood to the area

  •  Gua Sha: scraping the skin with Gua Sha tools to bring Qi and blood to the area

  •  Tui Na: massage techniques done over clothes to help disperse Qi

  •  Moxabustion: burning of mugwort herb to move Qi in that area or over an acupuncture point

  •  Electroacupuncture: adding electrical leads to the needles to promote the movement of Qi

  •  Auricular Acupuncture: acupuncture points pertaining to the entire body located in the ear

  • Korean Hand Therapy: points on the hands that refer to acupuncture points and regions of the entire body

  • Scalp Acupuncture:  acupuncture points and areas of the scalp that are particularly helpful for treating neurological issues

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine Dietary Therapy: specific food choices made based on your TCM pattern diagnosis to enhance your health

Each of these modalities works to move the bodies Qi (pronounced chee).  Qi is essentially the energy within us that makes us alive to run our organs and bodily functions.  When the Qi is interrupted, pain and body dysfunction will occur.  The bodies Qi runs in a meridian system throughout the body to supply the organ systems with the energy they need.  The meridian system is like a highway system.  When there is traffic, everyone is angry and stressed.  When the meridians are blocked or have reduced qi flow to a certain area there will be pain and dysfunction in the body. When traffic is moving freely, everyone is happy and on their way.  When the meridians are working to full capacity, there will be harmony and balance with an abundance of energy and feelings of wellbeing.

What does a treatment look like?

Maria will take an in depth look at your meridian system based on questions about your body and any symptoms you may be having.  She has recently added the latest acupuncture technology called Acugraph Digital Meridian Imaging.  This software provides the patient with a complete report on the health of their meridian system, an explanation of how acupuncture works and more specifically what the meridians do in your body along with food and herbal therapies that will bring the body into balance. By becoming more balanced, our bodies will no longer produce the symptoms you have been experiencing.   Based on these findings, she will choose a traditional Chinese diagnosis along with acupuncture points and any of the above list of modalities that will best suit your needs to help your body achieve the balance it craves.  With any treatment, it is your body that heals itself, Maria will give you the tools to make it happen.

When preparing for each treatment, please wear comfortable clothes that you can pull up to your knees and over your elbows since many of the points are located from the elbows to the hands and knees to the toes. There are over 400 acupuncture points on the body so there may be points in other places but many popular points are located on the arms and legs.

Based on the traditional Chinese diagnosis, acupuncture points will be chosen and needles will be inserted.  The needles are about as thin as your hair and look very harmless compared to the large needle that is used to take blood! Most people do not feel anything on insertion.  After the needle is inserted, there may be a feeling of energy moving in your body or heaviness at the point.

Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture

Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture is a protocol using extra thin, small needles in different acupuncture points on the face, neck, body or the abdomen.  Maria is trained in the face, neck and abdomen protocols.  The Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture system is a natural alternative to cosmetic surgery, strong prescriptions, topical ointments and pills.

Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture Protocol for the face and neck consists of 10 treatments, 2 times a week for 5 weeks.  During these treatments, you will not only be treated for the face, neck or abdomen protocols but also full body acupuncture treatments based on your traditional Chinese pattern diagnosis.  This is one of the only cosmetic procedures that actually improve the overall health of the patient along with making them look and feel younger!

The obvious benefits of each protocol includes having softer, firmer skin; reduction of deeper wrinkles, possible elimination of finer wrinkles and improvement of jowl lines.

In these treatments, we will talk about skincare, nutrition, herbs and supplements that will help you get and maintain the results.  Each treatment lasts around 60 minutes. The first treatment many last 90 minutes to allow time for the intake.

From a western medicine point of view, Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture works because the needling causes micro-traumas to the skin which the body responds to by increasing blood flow and increasing the production of collagen and elastin for wound healing.  The needling is done in the dermis which also may stimulate neurotransmitter production.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, Qi and blood are brought to the face, Qi is being lifted and the body energetic systems are being put into balance.

The needling is very superficial and only occasionally bruising occurs. As with any treatment, the results will depend on the body of each individual and how they respond to acupuncture, herbs and supplements.

To maintain good results, I advise monthly treatments which will not only be good for the face, neck or abdomen but also for your overall health.  At a minimum to maintain good results, the patient should do 2 treatments every 6 months.

Face and Neck Protocol: 10 treatments in 5 weeks  $1,200

Face and Neck Protocol Maintenance Appointments: $100

The Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture Protocol for the abdomen is used for weight loss, fertility and abdominal toning.  This is at minimum a 3 month program with treatments 2 times a week for 6 weeks then 1 time a week for 6 weeks.  The abdominal protocol can increase local metabolism, improve digestion, balance hormones and tone the skin.

Abdominal Protocol: 18 treatments in 12 weeks  $ 1,800

Abdominal Protocol Maintenance Appointments  $ 75
